ASL VERSUS SIGNED ENGLISH
A common mistake for many hearing people to make is that they assume just because they have learned a few signs, they can now sign ASL like a pro. Unfortunately this is not the case because ASL comes with deaf culture and a completely different grammar structure (as seen above). Signing English is also misleading because some hearing people think that their sentences in ASL must contain way more signs than are actually needed. In written English, articles like "the", "an", and "the" are necessary for sentence structure. In ASL they are more implied. There are no signs for those articles, there is no need for them. Also, from my own perspective as I hearing person I have learned that signing things is much faster than writing them down or saying them with my mouth. This is mostly because there are whole phrases that can be expressed in just a few signs.
